In Memory of Mr. Nihal Seneviratne
A Life of Service, Integrity, and Unwavering Loyalty to Royal College.

The Royal College Union mourns the passing of Mr. Nihal Seneviratne—former Secretary General of Parliament, distinguished civil servant, and one of Royal College’s most devoted sons. Mr. Seneviratne embodied the finest ideals of our institution. Throughout an illustrious public career and decades of service to the RCU, he was a constant example of integrity, wisdom, and quiet grace. His presence impressed not by force of voice, but by strength of character and an unfailing respect for all.

I came to know him closely in the late 1990s when he chaired the Royal Parade Committee, where I served as Secretary. His meticulous care, collaborative spirit, and deep reverence for Royal traditions ensured that every initiative honored the past while inspiring the future. Living nearby in Thimbirigasyaya, our association grew into a valued friendship beyond formal meetings.

As Vice President of the RCU, his counsel proved invaluable during transformative initiatives, including the establishment of the Loyalty Pledge and EDEX. He understood that lasting institutions are built on principle and sustainability, not grandstanding. His guidance helped shape programs that continue to serve Royal College today.

His commitment to the Help a Needy Student scholarship programme was especially profound. In its early, difficult years, he tirelessly canvassed support from Old Royalists overseas—often even during personal travels—returning with renewed momentum and quiet satisfaction. His selfless efforts laid a foundation that has enabled countless students to pursue a Royal education.

Beyond Royal College, Mr. Seneviratne’s service as Secretary General of Parliament exemplified the highest standards of public administration. He belonged to a generation whose word was their bond and whose loyalty to institution transcended personal ambition—marking the close of an era.

Royal College has lost a guardian of its values and a mentor to many. The nation has lost a standard-bearer of ethical public service. Yet we also celebrate a life extraordinarily well lived—measured by the institutions he strengthened, the students he uplifted, and the example he set.

To his family, we extend our deepest condolences. His memory will be cherished, his contributions honored, and his example upheld for generations.

May he attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana. His loyalty to Royal College—and ours to his memory—shall remain eternal.
