The Loyalty Pledge held its annual award ceremony in grand scale on 28th June 2024 at the Royal College Union Skills Centre. Recording another historic milestone in its journey, the Loyalty Pledge awarded 165 educational scholarships worth almost Rs. 8 million to young Royalists including 19 undergraduates.
Mr. Thilak Waththuhewa, the Principal of Royal College graced the award ceremony as the chief guest and Dr. Lakmal Kulasekara, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and the founding director of Danthaja Premium Dental Chambers delivered the inspiring keynote speech based on his life experience. The Secretary of Royal College Union, staff of Royal College, old Royalists from donor groups, office bearers of the Loyalty Pledge and its staff participated at the ceremony.
The representatives from various old Royalists groups including overseas groups were present at the ceremony. Old Royalists’ groups as well as individual old Royalists have been the main donors and live wire of the Loyalty Pledge. The Secretary of the Loyalty Pledge made a special appreciation to the donors who stood by Loyalty Pledge in good times as well as difficult times.
Mr. Waththuhewa, in his speech, highlighted how Loyalty Pledge has been integrated into the lives of todays’ students at Royal College. He emphasised that Loyalty Pledge has become the “place to go” for students at the College when they need an extra help to achieve their ambitions. On behalf of the College and staff, he his gratitude for the worthy cause delivered by Loyalty Pledge and extended his best wishes for a successful journey ahead.
The new scholars received their scholarship certificates during the ceremony. Randima Bhagya Wijesekera, a student in grade 12, made a speech explaining how Loyalty Pledge is helping him to meet with his educational needs in the current challenging economic climate. Supun Jayasinghe, who is an undergraduate in the Faculty of Agriculture in the University of Ruhuna shared his experience with the audience that how Loyalty Pledge has been a tower of strength for him to pursue his education. These narrations and reflections by the scholars on Loyalty Pledge through their life stories testified the glorious contribution that Loyalty Pledge has made to the Royal College community.
Adding colour to the event, the students of the Loyalty Pledge’s Personality and Communication Development Programme performed a song to entertain the audience.
The scholarship recipients are selected every year through a rigorous selection process. In addition, the academic performance and involvement with extra-curricular activities of every scholar is continuously monitored throughout the year. Each scholar will receive a stipend of Rs. 48,000 during the year which is distributed in equal quarterly instalments. More information of Loyalty Pledge is available at www.lmpc.lk.
